La Forêt was first constructed in 1824 and then adapted throughout the generations. The substantial farm buildings were used in WW11 as a ‘Free-French’ army post guarding the French side of the Line of Demarcation https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demarcation_line_(France)The ‘Line’ is credited with birthing much of the French Resistance. Take a number of walks and bike-rides with our pamphlets that tell stories of local heroism and sacrifice. For example, a 15 minute walk along lanes and tracks leads to Marvaud, where the two surviving ‘Cockleshell Heroes’ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Franktonwere hidden by a brave French family for 41 days in 1942.

Within the acre of gardens, the swimming pool overlooking farmland has its own barbecue area. Nearby, there is a secret garden and play area full of fairies and dinosaurs for the children. In addition, and for the parents who allow it (!), in the barn is a 2 metre high pile of clean straw for dive-bombing.

There are a range of board games, puzzles and cards to borrow free of charge. Easy-reading novels are in every rental unit. Take one and leave your own in exchange.

La Forêt lies in perfect family bicycling country, with many tracks and routes to explore. Bicycle hire is available locally and can be booked in advance.

Fishing in the meandering Charente River a kilometre away is available at a minimal charge from the Mayor of Alloue. Book in advance and your pass will be waiting for you at La Forêt. Some fishing tackle is also available for hire at La Forêt.
